Felt Roofing D-I-Y
(scroll down page to submit a question)As regards to any prospective attempt at D.I.Y roofing repairs on your house, my main piece of advice is to trawl the internet and contact a local flat roofing contractor. Ask them to give you a free estimate, they'll explain what remedial work requires undertaking. With this gleaned information, then it's up to you. Personally i would advise that you let a professional repair your roof.
However If you wish to to attempt a D.I.Y. felt roof drip edge, or re roof upon your rabbit hutch, or modestly sized garden shed then
Click Here for picture D.I.Y example. If you do insist on attempting a domestic roofing repair, then the most important piece of advice i can give, is that you ensure that the area of the roof you are trying to repair, is totally dry, and as most D.I.Y enthusiasts wont own a gas gun, this may entail waiting for a warm dry spell of perhaps two or three days.
The reason for waiting for a dry spell, is that most leaks appear where the seams have failed, water has perhaps been seeping in for a period of time, this can lead to "ponding" in between the layers, this pond of water beneath the felt has to thoroughly dry before a proper seal can be created upon the failing seam. After the roof is thoroughly dry, you must then ensure that the area of roof to be repaired is thoroughly cleaned of any grit and accumulated dirt/dust, as a roofing sealant will not adhere to dirt.
Once the roof area to be repaired is dry and clean, it must then be adquately primed, and this primer must be allowed to thoroughly dry, as roofing sealant will not adhere to wet primer. THAT'S IT.
Oh yeah, one more piece of advice is to ensure that a roof leak is not being caused by the surrounding building. For instance dodgy and deteriorating brickwork and slate work in older houses. Rotten window frames, dodgy roof lignts, failing pointing up along existing flashing's, pointing up in between coping stones. Water is brilliant at finding it's way in into a property, and will always channel downwards, with this thought in mind, assess your building.

I'm thinking of using rubber (1 piece) membrane for flat roof. Glue the decking and stick it down. It seems quite simple. Is it recommended than felt?
Hi what is the life span of a new felt roof. regards kate
